Society Statement Of Belief
The Logos Society of Edmonton follows 5 basic principles:
- God is our creator who knows and loves each one of us.
- God has provided, through the Bible, certain values, standards of behavior and fundamental truths, particularly in passages such as the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:1-17) and the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5, 6, and 7). These values, standards of behavior and fundamental truths are to guide us in living out our lives. Truth is not relative and, therefore, not based simply on each person's opinion.
- Although we all make mistakes, or commit sins, we can be forgiven because Jesus, the Son of God, offered Himself as payment for our sins, and is alive today to strengthen us through His Holy Spirit. Just as He forgives us for our sins, so must we forgive others who hurt us or sin against us.
- We are on this earth to love God and serve Him by caring for and serving our fellow human beings. We are not meant to live merely for our own pleasure and self-interest.
- God works in our lives and in the lives of those around us, and throughout our world as we spend time with Him in prayer.
Society Statement Of Belief Regarding Casinos
“The Edmonton Logos Society is not in favour of Logos schools, or any public schools for that matter, using casinos to raise funds for their schools. We believe that gambling as a method of financing schools is a very poor example to children, for it is not only morally wrong, but it is a source of a terrible addiction which can, and does, ruin individuals' lives and the lives of their families. Also, it can often make for greater inequality among schools regarding what they can provide for their students.
We believe that it is the responsibility of governments to provide sufficient funding for education. ‘We recognize that, at this time, some schools with Logos programs do use casinos to increase their funding, and we recognize that the decision as to whether to do so or not is a decision made by the School Parent Association working with the school principal. Yet, we believe that Logos parents in such schools who do not approve of this approach should not be expected or required to participate in running casinos. Whether they wish to make a contribution to the school in some other way could be a matter to be decided by them in consultations with the principal.”
